In many circles re-gifting is
considered poor behavior. On
December 13th the Four Lakes
SCUBA Club embraces re-gift
ing with open arms. Heres
whats going to happen: Bring an
unwrapped re-gift and $1.00 US
to the Holiday Party. It doesnt
have to be SCUBA related! Put
the re-gift on the re-gifting table
and give the dollar to Howard.
Anyone contributing to the table
and Howard will get a chance
to choose a re-gift off the table.

Dr. Magnusons research shows
a very sobering fact: Madisons
lakes are freezing later and
thawing earlier. 150
years ago Lake
Mendota averaged
four months of
ice. Today we
are down to
three months.
Should this
trend con
tinue, in 10 to
15 years, an
estimated two
months of ice will
occur.
Not only Madison but
the whole of Wisconsin,
Minnesota, Michigan, New York,
and Ontario, Canada are follow
ing the same pattern. Worldwide
the majority of the named glaciers
are receding.
What does this have to do with
diving? The obvious for us is
finding a good day to attempt
an ice dive! For all divers, Dr.
Magnusons research points
toward global warming and that
may be contributing to the coral
bleaching issue. Follow the next

ware bug in the D9 and D6 div
ing instruments. The software
bug may cause the D9 and D6
to incorrectly track dive time
on rare occasions, potentially
causing a risk to the diver. For

listed below shall be returned for
a software update that eliminates
this issue.

used for diving before the unit
has been updated with the lat
est software.
If the product is
used before updating the software,
backup instrumentation must also

Florida Expands Marine
Reserve to Largest in
North America

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. The
largest marine reserve in North
America is emerging on Floridas
southwest coast.
Gov. Jeb Bush and his Cabinet
voted 3-1 on Tuesday to approve a
management plan banning fishing
in a 61-square-mile section of Dry
Tortugas National Park in the
Gulf of Mexico and Florida Straits
about 75 miles west of Key West.
The new Research Natural Area
will be added to the existing
Tortugas Ecological Reserve,
where fishing has been prohibited
since 2001. Combined, the two
areas will prohibit fishing in 261
square miles.
The plan is designed to help over
fished species such as grouper and
red snapper recover. It also will
provide scientists with a living
laboratory, and divers and other
visitors with recreational and edu
cational opportunities.
Its good for the fish; its good for
the ecosystem; its good for fisher
men, said University of Miami
marine biologist Jerald Ault, who
testified in support of the plan.
The only dissenting vote was
cast by Attorney General Charlie
Crist, also Floridas governor-
elect.
I am reluctant to restrict a free
dom from individual recreational
fishermen and fisherwomen,
Crist said, who spoke fondly
of growing up fishing with his
father.
Bush and the Cabinet added
a provision that would restore
fishing after five years without
another vote.
The research area is so far from
shore few recreational fishermen
go there, said Florida Fish and
Wildlife Conservation Commission
Chairman Rodney Barreto.
Pristine dive sites in
North Sulawesi spared
23 November 2006
North Sulawesi, including areas
of outstanding natural beauty
above and below sea level such as
Bunaken National Park, Lembeh
Strait and Bangka Island, has
been spared an environmen
tal tragedy. The Indonesian
Ministry of Environment recently
announced that a gold mine
operation, which was threatening
to dump millions of tons of waste
into the sea in North Sulawesi,
will not be allowed to do so.
British-registered Archipelago
Holdings gold mine (operating
locally as MSM), threatened
to dump up to 1,500,000 tons of
ground up mining waste into the
sea, between the award-winning
Bunaken National Park and the
famous Lembeh Strait.
Marine biologists acknowledge
that North Sulawesi is the centre
of marine bio-diversity on the
planet. It is now a popular desti
nation for discerning dive tourists,
earmarked to become a World
Heritage Site.
The North
Sulawesi
Watersports
Association
(NSWA), which
represents many
of the areas dive
resorts, helped
achieve this
important vic
tory in the protection of a unique
marine habitat. The NSWA
launched a local media campaign
to raise awareness of the threat,
even presenting the case to rep
resentatives of the Indonesian
Parliament.
The Ministrys announcement
comes as welcome news for sus
tainable development. However,
concern still remains about how
the gold mine will dispose of its
waste. It is believed that it is now
planning to dump it on land, but
this could lead to new threats.
Local environmentalists are wor
ried that toxic bi-products of the
mining process could end up in
the areas water, creating a health
risk to the local population. Also,
that an earthquake, in this seis
mically active area, could trigger
a landslide. (A recent earthquake
in Papua led to a deadly landslide
at another mine.)
