DEAN’S MESSAGE Recently I have been thinking a great deal about music and our pr ofession, in relationship to the earthquake, hurricanes, and t he loss of the lives of young people to violence in our community. It is times such as these that in our worship music is an import ant part of what we as individuals and churches have turned to for healing, strength, and a renewed sense of purpose. As church musicians, we are in a profession which, in “normal” times, puts us in th e rather awe- some position through our playing, singing and conducting, of being responsible for tending to the lives of many who are tender of heart, hurt, helpless, hopeless, frightened. But in a time such as this, our ca lling is especially overwhelming. What we do has the power t o facilitate healing, soothe frayed nerves, give strength and provide help. Leonard Bernstein once said, “This will be our reply to tragedy and violence: To make music more intensely, more beautifully, m ore devotedly than ever before.” On Sunday afternoon, October 9th, the Richmond Chapter of the AGO with the choirs of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, Crystal Jo nkman and Bruce Neswick did exactly what Leonard Bern stein was talking about by offering the wonderful Hymn Festival to our community. May you through your efforts in the Ministry of Music, heal with intensity, beauty and devotion! DeMajo, Editor We’re on the Web! http://www.richmondago.org DID YOU KNOW? This month’s featured organ is the 1891 pipe organ located in the art gallery of the James J. Hill House in St. Paul, Minnesota. Renowned Boston or- gan-maker, George Hutchings, created the three storey pipe organ when the Hill family first moved into their new Summit Avenue mansion in 1891. The instrument is a mechanical action tracker organ with 17 ranks and 1,006 pipes—a particularly distinguished example of a residential pipe organ of America’s Gilded Age. The organ was used for family gatherings, concerts and parties. Four of the Hill daughters were married in the house at different times and Hill’s funeral took place there in 1916. Early concerts hosted by St. Paul’s Schubert Club also made use of the pipe organ.
