See the conference schedule in this Visitor registration information is available in this issue and on the Delta Omicron website www.delta-omicron.org Delegate registration may be made through the Executive Ofce. CC OMPANIS Delta Omicron is pleased to announce the accompanists for the Triennial Conference concerts: Suzanne Lahmann Burg, of Zanesville, Ohio, received a Master of Arts in Piano Pedagogy in 2005 from The Ohio State University where she graduated with Pi Kappa Lambda honors. She served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the School of Mu sic and was research assistant to piano professor Steven Glaser. She received a Bachelor of Music degree with majors in piano perfor mance and music education from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where she served as President of Alpha Chapter from 1973-1974. In 2000, she premiered Shadow Dances: Four Miniatures For Piano by Dan Pinkston at the Delta Omicron International Triennial Conference in Athens, Georgia. She presented a music topic, “Common Injuries to Soft Tissues in Keyboard Players: A De scription of Injuries, Treatments, Prevention Techniques, and the Role of the Piano Teacher” at the 2005 National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy in Chicago, IL. She recently received a grant from Ohio Music Teachers Association for music research at The Ohio State Univer sity. In April, Burg presented a Holocaust Remembrance Concert which was sponsored by Ohio University. Burg has been a piano teacher for more than 40 years. Her students have consistently won es with orchestras, and have continued on as music majors at major universities in Ohio. Her professional afliations include membership in Music Teachers National Association, Ohio Kathy Gates Vail is Associate Professor at William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where she teaches organ and handbells and accompanies the chorale and vocal students. She also directs a vocal ensemble that is one of the primary re cruiting groups for the school. A native of Clinton, Mississippi, Kathy received her Bachelor of Music Degree in Church Music with organ concentration and Masters of Music in Organ Per formance from Mississippi College. She served for eight years as Music Associate at Harrisburg Baptist Church in Tupelo, Missis sippi, where she also became involved as a keyboard specialist with the Mississippi Baptist Convention Church Music Department in Laurel and is Dean of the South Mississippi Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. Kathy has served as Province President for Kappa Province for the last nine years and has had the privilege of being one of the conference accompanists for the last three conventions. At the 2006 Triennial Conference, she was accompanist for the Collegiate Concert and for the Songs for Emmy at the Premiere Concert. The Wheel of Delta Omicron, Spring 2009 The Wheel of Delta Omicron, Spring 2009 C LUMNI Following the review of submitted audition applicants, Delta Omicron announc es the alumni performers for the Alumni Concert at the Centennial Conference. The Concert will occur on July 16, 2009, following the Alumni Dinner. Soprano Laurel Hines Seeds received her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music Degrees in Music Education and Vocal Performance from Kent State University. She is a full-time Instructor of Music at the Kent State Stark Cam pus and teaches applied voice, class piano and pre-theory classes. She also has taught at the University of Alaska, Fair banks and Malone College. Her 2009 Kent State Stark performances include musi cal direction of The Mikado and a faculty recital of arias and and piano. Laurel recently performed with the Canton Youth Symphony as the so prano soloist in Mozart’s Missa Brevis , gave a recital of French songs and arias at Kent State Stark and Malone College, and sang a recital as part of the Concert Series at the English Church of St. Mark’s in Florence, Italy. She has performed with the Akron Lyric Opera Theater and the Canton Comic Opera. Laurel is a member of the Lyric Theatre Ensemble, a professional ensemble in residence at Kent Stark, and also enjoys performing with the Cleveland Orchestra’s Allanda Small , soprano, is a native of New York and a graduate of William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Mis sissipi where she earned a Bachelor of Music Degree in Vo cal Performance. While at William Carey, she served as the President of the Omicron Sigma Chapter of Delta Omi cron from 1997-98. In August 2007, Allanda received her Doctorate of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance from The University of Southern Mississippi where she studied voice with Dr. Maryann Kyle. In the same month, she became As sistant Professor of Music (Voice) at The University of Mo and the Governor’s Award at the Mississippi Division of the National Association of The Tenderland Le Nozze di Figaro , and Susannah . In 2005, she toured Spain with the Triumph Chorale as a soloist and chorale member. Allanda was named Carmen with the Southern Opera and Musical Theatre Company, Leonora in Il Trovatore Suzel in L'Amico Fritz, and Madame Pompous in Too Many Sopranos through the Her latest performances include recital and opera scenes with The Redwoods Opera Workshop in Mendocino, California. In this venue, she performed the role of Les Pêcheurs de Perles and Fiordiligi in Mozart’s Così Fan Tutte . In February 2009, Allanda was a featured soloist with The University of Mobile Cham ber Singers presentation of Mozart’s Requiem . Upcoming performances include a solo recital “American Sound” which features the vocal works of American compos ers such as George Gershwin, Amy Beach, and Rodgers & Hammerstein. The Alumni Concert also will fea Chapter Flute Ensemble. The chapter boasts eight utists in its chapter and has added one prospective member performer and a pianist. Several mem bers of the Ensemble are professional musicians with present or past aflia tions to Sinclair Community College, Dayton Philharmonic and Dayton Opera Orchestras, and the Springeld Symphony. Over the years, many of them have performed in various ensembles and as soloists in Southeast Ohio and beyond. In 2008, the Flute Ensemble participated in a benet performance for Safe Haven (a mental health support center) held at the First Universalist Church in New Madison, Ohio. Memory by Lily Nehman Train trips have always been fun for me. I always enjoy the beautiful scenery owing by, the interaction with passengers, eating in the snack bar or café, and the music of the chug to New York City. The train was packed…one seat left. In Waynesboro, Virginia a passenger got on the train and sat next to me. She was anxious since she was going to Philadelphia to attend her daughter’s graduation. After a while we began to chat. She mentioned that she had gone to music school in Chicago and majored in piano. Then the surprise…her name was the scenery, the “chug-chug” of the train rushing over the tracks, the banter of passengers, but, best of all we enjoyed the discovery of knowing that we were each a member of Delta Omicron! The Wheel of Delta Omicron, Spring 2009 The Wheel of Delta Omicron, Spring 2009 C Delta Omicron announces the results of the Collegiate Concert auditions. The following collegiate members will perform on the Collegiate Concert on July 17 at the 2009 Triennial Conference in Erlanger, Kentucky: Molly Goforth has performed in a number of distinguished concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the Alys Stephens Center in Birmingham, Alabama. In high school, Molly appeared on the nationally broadcast ra dio show “From the Top” playing George Crumb’s Solo Cello . More recently, she performed on the viola da gamba with Julianne Baird and participated in the world premiere of Aaron Kernis’ Ballade for Eight Cellos . Molly is also the founder of Scrollworks Louisville, a program that provides free music lessons to under-privileged children. Molly is a cello perfor mance major at the University of Louisville where she studies with Professor Paul Bass Baritone Dale Brumeld was born in Salem, Mis sissippi. He attended Salem High School where he played tended Southwest Mississippi Community College where he majored in music education with an emphasis in trum the concert, marching, stage, and steel drum bands. After earning his Associates Degree in Music, he transferred to William Carey University where he now majors in vocal performance and is working toward his Bachelors Degree. He studies voice with Dr. Connie Roberts and is a member of the tour choir, chorale, the small singing group Carpenter’s Wood, instrumental ensemble, piano ensemble, and opera workshop. Dale was initiated into Omicron Sigma Chapter of Delta Omi cron in the spring of 2008. He is currently serving as the chapter’s musical director. Austin Seybert is a sophomore music education and trombone performance major (with an emphasis in jazz) at Marshall University where he studies trombone with Dr. Michael Stroeher. Seybert has performed with many ensembles at Marshall University, including playing lead trombone in the 12:00 Jazz Ensemble and principal trom bone in Marshall University’s Wind Symphony. On March 8th 2009, Seybert won Marshall’s University’s most presti bert has been a member of Delta Omicron’s Delta Kappa Chapter since the spring of 2008. Seybert currently serves as a Music Ambassador for Marshall University’s Music Department. Angela Crum is currently nishing her Bachelor’s of with Mr. Martin Saunders. Crum has performed with many ensembles at Marshall University including lead in Wind Symphony. In January 2008, she performed with the world-renowned all female big band, Sherrie Maricle and the DIVA Jazz Orchestra in New York. As a member of the Delta Kappa, she held the ofce of president from May 2005 to September 2007 and is now serves her chapter as rst vice-president. In 2006-2007, Crum served as the President of the West Virginia Collegiate Mu sic Educator’s Association and as the Vice-President of Marshall University’s Music Educator’s National Conference Student Chapter. In January, Angela Crum and Austin Seybert, were selected to perform Joseph Turrin’s Fandango Wind Symphony in April 2009. Among the submitted auditions, the following collegians received Honorable Mention. Where was the rst Executive Ofce? The rst ofce was in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. When the ofce opened in 1943, ofce equipment was limited to a notebook, typewriter, When did D.O. establish a website? In 1996 under the presidency of Ann Anthony Jones. The site was redesigned in 2003 by David Thompson, Jr. son of Past Chaplain Becky Thompson. It was displayed to members at the 2003 Triennial Conference. Becky Thompson served as the second webmaster. What is Delta Omicron’s mission statement and when was it established? Mission Statement of Delta Omicron was established by the Board of Directors on August 2, 2005. This statement clearly states the core values of Delta Omicron that have evolved from the past and will guide the fraternity into its second century. Summer 2008 Scholarship Recipients Jane Wiley Kuckuk Open Scholarship. She attended a ve-day master class entitled “Flute as Inspiration and Praise” with Tadeu Coelho in Greenville, South Carolina. Each day began with a special reading and message followed by warm-up exercises before the master class began. Dr. Coelho modeled specic techniques to improve contrasts. Twenty-seven people from age 8 to 68 attended the conference and performed over forty pieces of music. The music was a wonderful mix of the familiar standard literature, new music, and amazingly difcult music. A quote from Dr. Coel ho sum up the message and activities of the mas of yourself, and have faith that you will achieve.” Rachel Barnes Smith from Delta Nu used her the Mabel Dunn Hopkins Scholarship to attend the Texas Choral Directors Association Conven tion in San Antonio, Texas. Rachel is a rst- year teacher going into elementary music and used this opportunity to nd out more about her new profession. Rachel attended workshops on everything from classroom management to conducting techniques in elementary choir rehearsals. The convention gave Rachel the opportunity to converse with her undergradu many new contacts in the music education world. This summer was Katie’s and honored by the opportunities presented to her over the course of the summer. Katie was asked to perform Arnold Schoenberg’s Verklarte Nacht as well as Aaron Kernis’s Ballad with faculty members professional experience. The concert program for the student orchestra was phe Mussourgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition , Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring , and Holst’s in such a short span of time, and we performed all of those.” Katie sat as principal cellist for two of the ve weeks of the festival. Katie also served as a role model and proctor for the high school girls’ dorm during the festival. Katie summed up her experience: “I could not be more grateful to Delta Omicron for providing nancial assistance. Each member was asked to donate at least $100 over three years from 2006 through 2009. Also that month, several members participated in numerous instrumental and vocal concerts on campus. ALPHA SOUTH PROVINCE (Oxford, OH) In November, Mu held a scavenger hunt, and in December, the chapter held an "Upside Down Recital," held their annual "Pie an open musicale, a "Movie and Pedicures" night, and a potluck Thanksgiving dinner in No vember, and caroled at Books-A-Million and at a nursing home in December. The chapter has been reaching out to its community by volunteering weekly at a local soup kitchen, participat ing in the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk in Louisville, and has members of the chapter offering free music lessons at a local church on Thursday afternoons. Members also continue by Jill Dew, Carol Gangwer, Connie Kopp, Marcia Lucas, Judy Moore, Rita Schaffer, Shirley Schnizer, and Rebecca Wells. In December, the chapter enjoyed a program of music arranged by Eugenie Rocherolle presented by Suzanne Lahmann Burg on piano. (Mt. Pleasant, MI) Delta Iota welcomed seven new members in November: Chelsea Gelisse, Ryan Miller, Jessica Mills, Kristin Pagels, Sarah Quinn, Prea Saunders, and Zach Vandergraff. In November, members presented a closed musicale that included songs from the D.O. Songbook and also a "Holiday Musicale" in December: At the chapter Christmas party, held at the home of Chapter Adviser Dr. Robert Lindahl, Jessica Ter ban and Madeline Trombly performed. Dr. Sungee Lee, Professor of Violin/Viola at the uni versity, was initiated as a chapter patron, and an alumni ceremony was held for Nina McCuller, Krystal Mitchell, Cassandra Seymour, Shannon Shaker, and Jessica Terban.. The chapter has Days on campus, helping with Mount Pleasant Winterguard tryouts, donating to Toys for GAMMA PROVINCE at the Bent Fork Grill to celebrate Founders Day, with the reading given by President Karen by Judie Eidson and Stephanie Morrison. Music was performed by Grace Asquith, Suzanne Patron Ernest Charles), Judie Eidson, Donna Levene, Terri McIlree, and Stephanie Morrison. Sales at the annual boutique and dessert followed. Later that month, members traveled to attend a West Virginia Symphony Orchestra concert. In December, the chapter caroled at a local nursing home and also had a D.O. shirt- making party. The chapter also brought in the most canned food in for the music depart ment's canned food drive. (Jefferson City, TN) In September, Alpha Gamma held a closed musicale that featured Dr. Glenn Cragwall, Associate Professor of Communication at the college, as the guest speaker. He spoke about the proper and most efcient way to run a tion Inasmuch and did landscaping for a local elementary school. Also that month, members cal chairs. In October, the chapter presented an "Anything Goes" Musicale, had a scavenger hunt, swap day, and initiated six new members: Leigha Austin, Kristina Enter, Ashley Grifs, Matthew Mimbs, Rachel Nave, and Allison Phillips. Aside from keeping the music depart selling roses for $2 for senior recitalists. The roses are placed in the waiting room backstage with a note listing who purchased the roses for the performer. In November, Chapter Mother Leslie Cutshaw accompanied by Chapter Adviser Ann Jones performed a musicale featuring American composers. Also that month, the chapter voted Chapter Patron Perry Ward as the chapter's Patron of the Month. In December, members partnered with the college's MENC chapter to decorate the lobby of the music building, the chapter caroled at a local nursing tember, members of Gamma Mu held a musicale, played ultimate frisbee, had a movie night, participated in the "Music Major Picnic," and performed in several concerts on campus, act ing as performers, stage managers, and ushers. (Bowling Green, KY) Members of Omicron Omicron were quite busy in September. They hosted an Ice Cream Social open to the entire music de partment, served cake and ice cream after the Bowling Green Western Symphony Orchestra Concert in celebration of the orchestra's 100th birthday, and sponsored "Messy Games," the chapter's rst rush event of the fall. In October, some members distributed water to bands as provided hot chocolate to the university's marching band, and decorated pumpkins at its sec ond rush event. Some members also went to a music appreciation class and showed different and hung up posters for the Bowling Green Chamber Orchestra. Over the summer, members brought popsicles to the marching band during band camp, and the chapter also sponsored held a rush function and built Gingerbread Houses. The chapter is earning money to award the McClure Grant to Richardsville Elementary music program with a 50/50 Rafe, T-Shirt Sale, and coupon book for Brooster’s ice cream. (Murfreesboro, TN) In November members of Omicron Psi had a closed musicale for members to perform their jury pieces, helped music students by offering free music tutoring, held a potluck luncheon for faculty members, and initiated two new members. KAPPA PROVINCE: (Hammond, LA) In November, members of Omicron Delta at the home of Chapter Adviser Kay Schepker. (Hattiesburg, MS) In October, Omicron Sig ma participated in a chapel service on campus. Several members, prospective members, the chapter adviser, chapter patrons, and the province president participated in the Carey Chorale Concert "Sing Praises." The event was featured in an article by member Jacob Havard on the front page of the October 30th edition of the university's paper Campus Life. The chapter also held a prospective member recital and the 44th Anniversary Gala. In November, some members worked at the Belk Charity Sale and hosted a reception following Dr. Ellen Elder's faculty recital. Chapter Adviser Josephine D'Arpa and Chapter Patrons Dr. Paul Cotten, Peg gy Gates, Lois Parker, and LaDona Tyson participated in the Southern Hymn Festival at Main and, along with alumni and prospective members, enjoyed a Christmas party at the home of Chapter Adviser Josephine D'Arpa. LAMBDA PROVINCE (Williamsburg, VA) Delta Tau welcomed Vocal Coach Dan iel Ferro to campus in late October. The chapter sponsored the event that featured two master classes and private lessons. The chapter also hosted a reception following the master classes. Members Lissa Anderson, Sara Black (who also organized the event), Maurene Comey, and Lindsey Hayes participated. The chapter launched a new website with member Dustin Smith acting as webmaster. Members have been busy this fall with a lot of activities: hosting a home coming reception for current members at the college and alumni, having a table at a campus coffee shop, playing games, and doing activities with prospective members that included lots were honored to be awarded at their university's music department Major's Fair in October for the "Most Informative Display," enjoyed a grafti party and held a bake sale fundraiser in September, had an alumni reunion in October, welcomed new member Britany Poindexter. Several members participated in various concerts throughout the fall semester. MU PROVINCE (Stevens Point, WI) In November, Alpha Alpha welcomed four new members: Emma Cristan, Theresa Kroes, Brandon Kuss, and Chelsee Niedfeldt. The chapter enjoyed a potluck after the initiation ceremony. Members enjoyed several activities during the chapter's pledge week: Big Sibling Appreciation Day, Faculty Appreciation Day, Adviser Ap preciation Day, Rose and Gray Day, and Big Sibling Swap Day. The chapter also is sponsoring a music department apparel fundraiser. (Milwaukee, WI) Delta Eta has been busy this fall with a musicale, helping at the PSOA open house, having a D.O. music rummage sale, and having several members participate in the university's annual choir and orchestra combined concert in November. The chapter also helped out on campus by giving tours of the music building to prospective freshmen. In December, the chapter welcomed new prospective mem bers and performed at the Steinway Gallery. XI PROVINCE (Lakeland, FL) In the fall, members of Alpha Phi participated in "Mu sic Under the Stars" by performing and selling concessions and baked goods. Their rush week was lled with activities, including chocolate fondue and games, the serenading of new and games night, a popcorn movie night, the big/little nd, a car wash fundraiser, weekly faculty lunch runs for donations to the chapter. The chapter welcomed three new prospective members. Nearly all members performed in the music department's opening gala in October. To quote Director of Publicity Katherine Smith, "The choral ensembles began the program under the skillful direction of Dr. Carol Kreuger, a Delta Omicron alumna. Dr. Kreuger is a new addition to our faculty, and we are thrilled to have her." OMICRON PROVINCE (Indiana, PA) This fall, Delta Sigma joined forces with Phi Mu Alpha and Sigma Alpha Iota to present a Christmas musicale. The prospective members performed their closed recital, and the chapter enjoyed a Halloween party and a Christmas party, raised over $300 from the annual apple dumpling sales, and welcomed six new mem bers and two professional members, Dr. Christine Clewell and Dr. Robert Peavler. Delta Kappa member Mary Heath was awarded a musical arts guild instrumental scholar ship. Omicron Omicron Chapter Patron Dr. Michael Kallstrom received the Distinguished University Professor Award; chapter member was the third place winner in Kara Oglesby was the recipient of the Bennie Beach Jr. Memorial Scholarship. Delta Tau member Lissa Anderson was the recipient of a scholarship for a lesson with Daniel Ferro. Ms. Anderson, Sara Black, Lauren Estes, Miriam Foltz , and Rachel Jones were all awarded applied music scholarships. Ms. Morton also was the drum major at Otterbein College this past year when the football team made the playoffs for the rst time in the college's history. Erin Cassel toured with a professional group performing Christmas pro grams throughout the United States. Erin Keesy, Holly Riggs, and Jenifer Thomas performed with the Uni versity Cardinal Singers on a radio program, at the National Collegiate Choral Organization's National Conference, and in Lexington as university outreach. , and Marcia Wood presented a musical program for Friendship Village; member Nancy Harrison performed ute with the Harp Ensemble at the Dayton Music Club; and Mary Fahrenbruck served as accompanist 45th Annual Young People’s Concert presented its 45th Annual Young People’s Concert on February 22, Forestieri, Mary Ann Obert, and Gloria Wharton. Ann Droste accompanied many of the hosted a cookies and punch reception for performers, family, friends, and members of the church. Alpha Gamma Helps Community Members of Alpha Gamma Chapter participated in a community outreach program called “Operation INASMUCH” on Saturday September, 20 2008 on the campus of Carson- Newman College. Over 525 students from Carson-Newman College participated in “Opera tion INASMUCH”. College organizations at Carson-Newman College reached out to the community by going to nursing homes, area churches, schools, and group homes. Alpha Gamma members traveled to Fairview-Mar guarite Elementary School and helped teach ers and parents clean out the ower beds and make a yellow stone pathway leading to the courtyard behind the school. All Carson- by noon to share their experiences of the day and enjoy a lunch provided by Chick-Fil-A.
