HPH is obviously successful but we dont know
enough about how it works: Since the first European
Pilot Hospital Project (Rudolfstiftung Hospital Vi-
enna, 1989-1996) and the European Pilot Hospital
Project on Health Promoting Hospitals (EPHP,
1993-1997) no further internationally comparative
evaluation on HPH has been performed so far. This
lack of knowledge has repeatedly been criticized in
the scientific literature. In comparison to other health
promotion networks, especially cities and schools,
HPH seems under-researched. Apart from a lack of
arguments to convince decision-makers, sponsors
and professionals in health care, this lack of knowl-
edge is also problematic from a quality perspective,
since little is known about problems and needs for
improvement.
Against this background, PRICES-HPH, an interna-
tional evaluation project on HPH, has been
launched, with the aim to address the following re-
search questions:
What was / is done in HPH networks and mem-
ber organisations?
How comprehensive do these activities cover
the concept of HPH? How do they relate to rec-
ommendations and requirements of the Interna-
How are the specific network features related to
organisational features of member organisa-
tions and their health promotion interventions?
Overall: What can be l
earnt about the imple-
mentation of HPH?

The project will run in 2009 / 2010 and is coordi-
nated by the Vienna WHO-CC on Health Promotion
in Hospitals and Health Care. It was approved by
the HPH Governance Board, and 28 HPH networks
will participate.

Addressing the socio-economic
New publication by WHO-Euro
Injury and violence are a leading cause of death and
disability in the WHO European Region. Wealth is a
major determinant of health, and there is a steep
social gradient of ill health due to injuries and vio-
lence. Addressing this important cause of inequity in
health is a matter of social justice, says a new WHO
publication. The document summarises evidence on
the socioeconomic safety divide from a large sys-
tematic review:
