Anita Janis, Dean Del Norte, Klamath-Trinity, PBSP College of the Redwoods galia The colorful attire worn by the graduates, faculty, and the officers of the college on the occasion of commencement has roots in medieval history. The gown is an adaptation of the robe of a friar priest, the hood of the monk’s cowl, the mortarboard cap of the skull cap worn to protect tonsured heads against the drafts of medieval classrooms. he Gown The gown indicates the highest degree held by the wearer. The bach- elor’s gown has long pointed sleeves. The master’s gown has long oblong sleeves. The doctor’s gown is distinguished by very full sleeves with three black or colored velvet bars and by velvet on the front. he Tassel The position of the tassel on the cap indicates whether or not the gradu- ate’s degree has been conferred. If the wearer has graduated, the tassel is worn on the left. If not, it is worn on the right.
